Thank you for your interest in helping to brainstorm the most common reasons why dogs & cats become unwanted. Let’s generate a list of the most common ways that Dogs & Cats come into the animal rescue system and some possible solutions! That way we can be proactive and solve the problem upstream or, if needed, move quickly to provide an intervention solution.

For example, Problem: Dog unwanted due to death of owner.

Prevention Solution: Work with people to come up with a proactive plan for their animal in case something happens to them. Help them get the legal paperwork necessary to make sure their wishes are followed.

Intervention Solution: Have a list of animal rescues that want to specialize in intaking Dogs or Cats in this situation since they usually have to move fast.

This project lists the most common ways that Dogs & Cats enter the animal rescue system. Below you will find all of the “reasons” animals are unwanted that have been generated so far. We want to get as complete a list as possible in order to save more animals.

What “reasons” have you heard most often during your experience with animal rescue? Let’s figure out responses or “protocols” for each. This list shows the “reasons” given and you will notice that many have links to projects to solve these or create protocols for these “reasons”.

Simply click on the link to participate in the specific project to solve or create protocols in response to the specific “reasons” given. If you are an animal rescue that wants to be involved in helping with the prevention or intervention solution, please add your animal rescue’s name as a resource to refer to in that situation. Remember, we are looking for both proactive solutions that prevent the “reason” from happening as well as effective reactive interventions and protocol solutions once the problem occurs.

Please help us add to this list by contacting us via the comments section below. Please help us by sending us the following information: 1. Common Reasons why a Dog or Cat becomes unwanted. 2. Prevention or Intervention solutions to add under that heading until a new project is created for that specific “reason”. 3. The name of your animal rescue, if you wish to be a part of the solution and referred to when that “reason” or problem occurs. Please also let us know of any corrections or updates that need to be made to this list. If you have found an animal rescue that no longer wants to be referred to, please let us know!

Our goal is to get a complete list of the most common reasons why Dogs & Cats become unwanted so that we can develop effective prevention and intervention protocols that save the animal. If we combine our best responses we can develop an effective Dog & Cat safety net for common “unwanted reason” scenarios. We are also striving to actively seek out the most effective “pathway” for handling each common situation.

For those who are interested, there will also be the possibility of working together to create a specific protocol for which rescue will be notified, or called on to help, for which specific “reasons”. That way we can work together seamlessly to save even more animals. By combining our resources and strengths across animal rescues we can greatly increase the number of animals saved. Let’s work together for the benefit of the animals!

Here is a list of the most common “reasons” why Dogs & Cats are unwanted. For more information on how to participate in a specific “reason” project, please click on the links below once they are created.

This Crowdsourcing Request Project was created by DOG RESCUE, a Tempe based 501(c)3 nonprofit since 1999. The goal is to help our local animal rescues have the information & referral sources they need to save even more animals. Let’s share our best tips, information and resources so that we can send the public down the best pathway to a satisfactory solution.

That way more animals can be saved with less time, money, energy and resources. When the public is sent down the best solution pathway it creates less wear and tear on animal rescue volunteers and keeps them “in the game” helping animals longer!

We will be working to provide additional support those animal rescues interested in specializing in responding to specific “reason scenarios”. We will also be forming new partnerships with outside individuals & organizations willing to donate money or needed donation items to assist the animal rescues assisting in specific “reason” scenarios. CommunityCause.org will support the animal rescues working to intervene in each common scenario.

Let’s prevent animal rescuer burnout! Let’s save more animals by creating a stronger safety net! Let’s improve response time & increase response effectiveness by contacting the animal rescues best positioned to help out in specific situations.
