Homeless Animals Rescue Team

Homeless Animals Rescue Team
Name of the Organization : Homeless Animals Rescue Team
Type of Organization: Spay & Neuter Group
Our Area of Service: Tempe, Mesa, AZ
Our Website Address: http://www.hart-az.org
Main Services Provided, Interests Served or Populations Helped that this Organization Specializes in offering to the public: Rescue of animals, primarily cats and kittens. We do TNR and specialize in trapping feral cats for sterilization purposes only. We rescue tame strays that are free-roaming or community cats. We rescue kittens under 8 weeks of age.
Secondary Services, Interests, or Populations Served: We network with other bonafide rescues who do adoptions. We foster on a limited basis. We feed feral colonies on a nightly basis as well.
Our Mission Statement: Our mission is to engage in activities that curb overpopulation, impede the feral cat cycle, re-home abandoned cats and kittens, promote responsible pet ownership, and end the cycle of animal suffering by a humane approach that utilizes spaying and neutering as its primary weapon. We accomplish this goal by implementing feral cat management through the Trap, Neuter & Return program (TNR).

Overpopulation of cats and dogs is a direct result of widespread social indifference, lack of awareness, and irresponsible pet ownership characterized by failure to sterilize pets, abandonment, and allowing pets to become lost without appropriate identification.

The local animal welfare groups, humane societies and animal control facilities are besieged with discarded cats, kittens, dogs and puppies. The numbers are staggering, and due to limited government funding and scarce public donations, the agencies cannot care for them all. As a result, literally hundreds of innocent, adoptable cats, kittens, dogs and puppies are needlessly killed on a daily basis – in one county alone. Multiplied by the number of counties across the country, the true number of needless killings is staggering and shocks the sensibilities of caring and conscientious citizens. If the root of the problem is not appropriately dealt with, the cycle of killing will continue. Sadly, this unnecessary and pointless killing is entirely avoidable. All that is needed is awareness, people who act on their concerns, and simple preventative care.

Feral cats occupy a unique niche in the animal world, and institutions are still struggling to find an acceptable way to deal with them. Lost and abandoned cats, if fortunate enough to survive the perils of urban life, including such things as traffic, exposure to the elements, predators, and starvation, will reproduce unchecked generation after generation, creating a feral population that cannot be domesticated or reintroduced into a family setting. These cats are, for the most part, not adoptable. If captured and sent to “shelters” they will be killed – no exceptions.

Trap-Neuter-Return “TNR” of Feral Cats
H.A.R.T. identifies feral cat colonies that have not been sterilized and traps feral cats, transports them to a vet for spaying, neutering, and ear tipping for identification, and then transports the feral cats back to the area where they were trapped, after a recovery period. Most feral spay/neuter programs in Arizona charge a mere $25 donation per cat to cover the cost of the spay or neuter service. Feral cat caregivers on the property where TNR is being implemented, agree to continue to provide food and water when the cats are returned.

H.A.R.T. identifies young feral kittens who are deemed to be tamable and places them in foster care when possible. These kittens will not be returned to the feral colonies. Instead, they will be socialized and prepared for later adoption. In addition, any homeless strays or abandoned tame adult cats will also be processed for adoption, when possible. They will be combo tested, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and spayed/neutered through H.A.R.T. or other rescue groups. We believe that TNR should be used only for feral cats, not tame, adoptable cats that have been abandoned and are in need of rescue.
What we do. Who we Help:

We assist the community through TNR as we have the availability to do so. TNR is a self help program that we can assist you with. We schedule trap jobs as availability in our schedules allow and rescue tame cats and kittens in order to network them into foster care and adoption. Our website has many resources available to the public at large and many of those resources are FREE or low cost. We foster as we have the availability to do so (as space opens up) and prepare cats and kittens for adoption. We feed numerous feral and free-roaming cat colonies on a nightly basis 365 days/year.

An Example of a Great Fit for us or a Typical or Ideal Client that Could make use of our Services is: HOA’s that wish to limit the feral population within their property lines have paid us to TNR their entire colonies.

We volunteer our time when available, but we also have full time jobs. TNR is a self help program, and with a little direction, many people can do themselves.

We have assisted the elderly and people who cannot trap and transport for themselves.

Senior Volunteers >70 Years Old Accepted?—–Yes—->: yes
An Example of a Volunteer who would be a Great Fit and/or Characterisitics of an Ideal Volunteer for us: Volunteers who would be a good match for HART would be anyone who is willing to set aside a small bathroom or small bedroom for fostering. Ideally, we wouldn’t want to mix any non-tested or un-tested animals with any of the volunteer’s pets. We also would not want to mix HART fosters with anyone else’s rescue fosters. If you are already fostering for another rescue organization, please continue to volunteer for that organization only. Mixing foster cats, kittens, and dogs with another rescue group’s animals can become a headache.
Special Skills & Expertise Needed?–Type of Help Requested: Occasionally we have the need for animal transport. Ideally, this would be an unpaid and volunteer position. There are occasions when we require the transport of a caged cat or another animal, to be transported to the vet clinic for surgery. General hours for transport are between 7-9 am (drop off) and 3-5 pm (pick up).
Networking Opportunities, Partnerships, Joint Ventures or Group Associations sought: HART wishes to network with other non-profit 501(c)(3) groups who do adoptions. HART typically does not do adoptions as we do not have an adoption venue. If your rescue group has an adoption venue such as a Petsmart or PetCo, if you deny potential cat adopters for declaw, if you require indoor only situations for your rescue cats, and deny potential adopters for having a doggie door (cat adoptions only, not dogs), and generally are a sane rescue group, we would like to network with you.
Sponsor & Sponsorship Needed: We would welcome any business to sponsor a rescue pet, an event, or otherwise. Please contact us for the best fit for you!
Referrals, Introductions & Connections Requested: We could always use more foster parents for animals
