Agenda for the Animal Help & Resources Seminars—Become an “Ambassador for Animals”!
The CommunityCause.org website has helpful links that people can access to help find animal resources. Simply hover over the tab “Animal Help” on the main menu and you will see a drop down menu. Simply hover over the “Help Dogs” tab and you will see another drop down menu that lists some of the common “dog issues. When you click on “Dog Help Home Page”, you will see even more options and links to pages.

***What to do if you have Lost or Found a Dog or Cat. Where to post online and which local organizations help.

• All of the local lost & found organizations have requested that we send everyone to http://www.helpinglostpets.com/ to post any animals. You can even sign up to receive alerts when new lost or found animal postings come in. There is also an interactive map that shows the location of lost/found animals and even the locations of stray animal sightings and lost/found posters! • As soon as you post an animal on this website, the volunteers from local nonprofit organizations such as Lost Dogs Arizona, Lost Cats of Arizona and Straydar all get to work assisting you. They use the information from the helpinglostpets.com website to try to make matches using their skills and knowledge.
• It is always best to avoid losing your dog by encouraging children and people who provide services in the home to securely close doors & gates.
• Always keep ID on your animals and please consider getting a microchip for your animal. TIP: Be sure to register your microchip! Many people assume that their contact information is automatically registered when the microchip is implanted. For most microchip companies it is not! Do this test: Phone the microchip company and give them your animal’s microchip number (as if you have just found the animal) and see what information they give.
• When registering your microchip and rabies tag information there is space for extra phone numbers. Flood those spaces with the numbers of people you know who always answer the phone and always know how to reach you if your animal is lost or found. You may even consider using your vet’s number as a contact and prearranging that you will pay for boarding if your animal is every found roaming.
• Buy an ID tag. You can have one made instantly at many Petco or PetSmart stores. TIP: Choose the heart shaped tag and you can get 6 phone numbers. Flood those spaces with the numbers of people you know who always answer the phone and always know how to reach you if your animal is lost or found. TIP: Put 2 numbers with the same area code on the same line. Ex: (602) 254-0198, 898-8914 or (480) 547-2356, 498-0515. That way you can get 2 phone numbers on each line
• Always put out posters for a lost or found animal. This is still the number one way that animals find their way home. Dogs can travel up to 20 miles a day, so make sure you put them on the corners of major cross streets for many miles away from where the dog was lost. TIP: Put large posters on busy streets and A4 size posters in side streets. TIP: Put a description or picture, but do not show any special markings on the animal. If someone says they “found” your animal, ask about the distinct marking. There have been a lot of scams in Arizona where people say your animal has been injured and needs surgery send money.
• Go to all locations of Animal Care & Control at least every 2 days. Also visit the Humane Society. Animals with identification. Your animal is only guaranteed 72 hours of life before it is “euthanized” if it has no Id tags or microchip. TIP: ALWAYS assume that your animal has lost its ID tags and/or the microchip was not found or did not give your information. Still go every 2 days. TIP: If you find a dog or cat, write down the contact information from their collar. NEVER remove their collar to contact the animal’s family because if the animal escapes again then they are without any information. TIP: All veterinarians will scan an animal for a microchip for FREE. IMPORTANT: Please know that microchips often rove around the animal’s body and have been found in the toe or the front of the chest. Make sure the person scans the animal’s entire body as well as their limbs to search thoroughly for a microchip.

***What to do about Outside Cats Options & Information on the FREE Spay & Neuter programs and the City of Tempe Program & TNR effort.
Contact the Spay/Neuter Hotline to link with organizations that can help. I usually say that outside cats keep pests like scorpions and roof rats at bay because they eat them. When a cat colony has been trapped, neutered and released (TNR) they prevent more cats from moving in. There will be less yowling because the animals are sterilized. A normal lifespan of an outdoor cat is only 3 years. People should keep their personal cats indoors only to prevent them from getting hit by cars or contracting Feline Leukemia.
